Medications and Prescriptions
Generic name: Ubiquinone
Product Brand Name: CoEnzyme Q10 ® (CoQ10)
1. Description: CoEnzyme Q10 is necessary for the energy production responsible for our life processes. It is an essential component of our cells and is utilized by the mitochondria in the normal process of energy production. As its levels drop, so does our general status of health. Low levels can result in many problems including: high blood pressure, heart attack, angina, immune system depression, periodontal disease, general lack of energy and obesity. It has been shown to extend life in laboratory animals when supplemented in their diets.
Improved energy production is of particular importance to athletes and bodybuilders.
2. CoEnzyme Q10 is Prescribed for: CoEnzyme Q10 boosts energy, enhances the immune system, and acts as an antioxidant. A growing body of research suggests that using CoEnzyme Q10 supplements alone or in combination with other drug therapies and nutritional supplements may help prevent or treat some of the following conditions: Heart Disease, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Diabetes, Heart Damage caused by Chemotherapy, Breast Cancer, Periodontal (gum) Disease.
As an antioxidant, it helps prevent the accumulation of free radical damage which can lead to degenerative disease. Our ability to produce CoEnzyme Q10 decreases as we age. This safe and non-toxic product has been consumed by millions of people worldwide for over 20 years.
In a placebo-controlled study, CoEnzyme Q10 supplementation was shown to help people with congestive heart failure. People with congestive heart failure may not see any results for a few months, but should not quit taking it immediately without consulting a doctor. People with angina have been able to exercise for longer periods of time and with more energy when supplementing with Coenzyme Q10. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure and improve the pumping function of the heart.
CoEnzyme Q10 may even help facilitate weight loss due to its stimulating effects on the body’s metabolism.
3. Drug Mechanism: CoEnzyme Q10 is a member of the quinone cyclic compounds such as Vitamins E and K. CoEnzyme Q10 can supply or remove oxygen from biologically active molecules. Every cell in your body contains many intercellular components called mitochondria, which produce 95% of the total energy of the body. CoEnzyme Q10 is an integral part of the membranes of the mitochondria where it is involved in the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the basic energy molecules of the cell. Supplementing CoEnzyme Q10 aids in the body's cellular respiration and energy production; it's that simple.
CoEnzyme Q10 helps the body convert food into energy in the form of ATP. Nearly every cell in the body contains at least some CoEnzyme Q10, with mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of cells, containing the most. The heart and liver, due to their high content of mitochondria, contain the most CoEnzyme Q10 out of any organs in the body.
4. Dosage Form: As a dietary supplement, take 1-3 capsules daily with meals. We recommend taking this product with a source of essential fatty acids such as Evening Primrose Oil.
The general recommended dose for CoEnzyme Q10 supplementation is 30 to 60 mg daily. Higher doses have been used in studies and may be recommended for the following conditions:
• Congestive heart failure: 50 to 150 mg a day
• High blood pressure: 50 to 150 mg a day
• To enhance athletic performance: 60 mg a day for 4 to 8 weeks
• Heart attack: 120 mg a day for 28 days after the heart attack
• Breast cancer: 400 mg per day for potential prevention and treatment
CoEnzyme Q10 is fat-soluble so should be taken with a meal containing fat for optimal absorption.
5. Drug Interactions: Medications that can lower the levels of CoEnzyme Q10 in the body include statins for cholesterol (atorvastatin, cerivastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin), fibric acid derivatives for cholesterol (specifically, gemfibrozil), beta-blockers for high blood pressure (such as atenolol, labetolol, metoprolol, and propranolol), and tricyclic antidepressant medications (including amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline, protriptyline, and trimipramine).
6. Pregnancy: CoEnzyme Q10 has not been studied in pregnant women.
7. Nursing Mothers: CoEnzyme Q10 has not been studied in nursing mothers.
8. Dietary and Alcohol Considerations: Primary dietary sources of CoEnzyme Q10 include oily fish, organ meats such as liver, and whole grains. Most individuals obtain sufficient amounts of CoEnzyme Q10 through a balanced diet, but supplementation may be useful for individuals with particular health conditions or those taking certain medications.
9. Possible Side Effects: Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable doctor.
CoEnzyme Q10 appears to be generally safe with no significant side effects, except occasional stomach upset. However, the safety of CoEnzyme Q10 supplementation during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unknown and, therefore, should not be used during that time until more information is available.
Nausea, diarrhea or stomach upset may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly. Unlikely but report promptly loss of appetite or trouble sleeping. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
10. Storage: Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. CoEnzyme Q10 is perishable and can break down at temperatures reaching 45°C (115°F) and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down. Keep away from light. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.
