Fungal infections

Fungi are simple plants that lack the green pigment chlorophyll. They include mushrooms, moulds, yeasts and rusts. Some species are parasites in plants and animals and can cause fungal infections. Infections are not particularly dangerous, but can be unpleasant and embarrassing. Typical symptoms include reddening of the infected area, formation of blisters, feelings of itching and burning. Fungal infections develop quickly and need to be treated on time. The most common types of fungal infections are tinea, athlete’s foot and candida (yeast infection). Overweight or diabetic people, as well as people who work with water (e.g. dishwasher) are affected more often.

Products: Antifungals

Clotrimazole
Clotrimazole is a broad spectrum antimycotic with fungicidal properties. Clotrimazole is used to treat yeast and fungal infections (including candidiasis and tinea) of the vagina, and skin such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and body ringworm.

Diflucan
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Antifungal (treatment of certain fungus infections). PRESCRIBED FOR: Oral, esophageal, urinary, vaginal and possibly other organ infections caused by the fungus Candida. Fluconazole has also been used in the fungal infection Cryptococcus.

Lamisil
Lamisil (generic name: terbinafine) is an antifungal agent that is taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Terbinafine acts by interfering with the ability of fungi to make chemicals called sterols that are an important part of the membrane that surrounds fungal cells and holds them together. This weakens the cell membrane. Oral terbinafine is more effective for treating fungal nail infections than griseofulvin (Fulvicin; Gris-Peg) and itraconazole (Sporanox), two other antifungal agents used for treating fungal nail infections. Topical terbinafine was approved by the FDA in 1993. Terbinafine oral tablets were approved in 1996.

Nizoral
Nizoral, a broad-spectrum antifungal drug available in tablet form, may be given to treat several fungal infections within the body, including oral thrush and candidiasis.

Orungal
Orungal (Itraconazole) also known as "Sporanox" is a drug used in the treatment of fungal infections, such as aspergillosis, blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and fungal infection localized to the toenails and fingernails (onychomycosis).

Sporanox
Sporanox (Orungal) capsules are used to treat four types of serious fungal infection: blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, and onychomycosis. Blastomycosis can affect the lungs, bones, and skin.
