Hyperlipidemia is a general term for elevated concentrations of any of the lipids (fats) in the plasma, the three main ones being cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoproteins. An excess of lipids in the blood can be due to a disorder of lipid metabolism. However diet also plays an important role, because many foods contain cholesterol and increase its concentration in the blood. Particularly the so called “trans fats” which are used in the preparation of various fast foods are very rich in cholesterol. If blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are too high, there is an increased risk for coronary artery disease as well as many conditions which are induced by blood vessel clogging. Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin (Lipitor, Pfizer), is a member of the drug class known as statins, used for lowering blood cholesterol. It also stabilizes plaque and prevents strokes through anti-inflammatory and other mechanisms.
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-determining enzyme located in hepatic tissue that produces mevalonate, a small molecule used in the synthesis of cholesterol and other mevalonate derivatives. This lowers the amount of cholesterol produced which in turn lowers the total amount of LDL cholesterol. Atorvastatin was first synthesized in 1985 by Bruce Roth while working at Parke-Davis Warner-Lambert Company (now Pfizer). With 2008 sales of US$12.4 billion, Lipitor is likely the top-selling drug in the world. US patent protection is scheduled to expire in June 2011. However, Pfizer made an agreement with Ranbaxy Laboratories to delay the generic launch in the US until November 2011.

Rosuvastatin is a member of the drug class of statins, used to treat high cholesterol and related conditions, and to prevent cardiovascular disease. Shionogi developed the product and the Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca markets it as Crestor. In India, Rosuvastatin is marketed as Rozavel by Sun pharma and in Pakistan it is manufactured and marketed as "Rolip" by Hilton pharma.

Lescol (generic name: fluvastatin) is a cholesterol- lowering medicine. It inhibits the production of cholesterol by the liver. It lowers overall blood cholesterol as well as blood LDL cholesterol levels. LDL cholesterol is believed to be the "bad" cholesterol that is primarily responsible for the development of coronary artery disease. Lowering LDL cholesterol levels retards progression and may even reverse coronary artery disease, thus reducing the chance of heart attacks.

Zetia is a medicine used to lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. It is used for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet alone. It can be used by itself or with certain other medicines to treat high cholesterol.
