A Drug Shield for Bird Flu Products: anti-avian drugs
Amantadine
Amantadine (a-MAN-ta-deen) is an antiviral. It is used to prevent or treat certain influenza (flu) infections (type A). It may be given alone or along with flu shots. Amantadine will not work for colds, other types of flu, or other virus infections.
Amantadine also is an antidyskinetic. It is used to treat Parkinson's disease, sometimes called paralysis agitans or shaking palsy. It may be given alone or with other medicines for Parkinson's disease. By improving muscle control and reducing stiffness, this medicine allows more normal movements of the body as the disease symptoms are reduced. Amantadine is also used to treat stiffness and shaking caused by certain medicines used to treat nervous, mental, and emotional conditions.
Oseltamivir
Oseltamivir (brand name Tamiflu) is the #1 doctor-prescribed flu medicine. The only one drug approved for treatment of Avian Flu. Last flu season, doctors wrote more prescriptions for TAMIFLU (oseltamivir phosphate) than any other flu treatment. TAMIFLU attacks the influenza virus and stops it from spreading inside your body.
Rimantadine
Rimantadine is a synthetic (man-made) anti-viral drug that can prevent viruses in cells from multiplying. To prevent a viral infection, the drug should be started before exposure to the virus. Clearly, this is not practical for most viral infections. Rimantadine initially was used to prevent influenza A during flu season, and, if given within 24 to 48 hours after the onset of flu symptoms, to decrease the severity of the flu. Rimantadine is chemically related to amantadine (Symmetrel), but rimantadine has fewer side effects on the nervous system than amantadine. Rimantadine was approved for use in 1993.
