Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, characterized by swelling, warmth, redness of the overlying skin, pain and restriction of motion. It can be caused by any disease involving the synovial membranes or causing degeneration of cartilage. Aspirin and analgesics are usually prescribed to suppress inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is a form of arthritis which typically involves the joints of the fingers, wrists, feet and ankles. Arava
Arava (generic name: leflunomide) is an oral, disease-modifying drug that is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Leflunomide reduces inflammation in the joints that is responsible for both the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and the destruction of joints. This reduces symptoms as well as the progressive deformities of the joints caused by the arthritis. Leflunomide reduces inflammation by suppressing the activity of immune cells responsible for the inflammation. Leflunomide suppresses immune cells by inhibiting dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, an enzyme that is necessary for the production of DNA and RNA. Without DNA and RNA the immune cells (and most other types of cells) cannot multiply or function (or exist). Because of its unique and different mechanism of action, leflunomide is of value when added to other medications used for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Leflunomide was approved by the FDA in September, 1998.

Celebrex (Celecoxib) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to relieve the pain, tenderness, inflammation (swelling), stiffness caused by arthritis, menstrual cramps, and colonic polyps.

Mobic
Mobic-movalis (generic name: meloxicam) is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and are used to treat pain and/or inflammation. Prostaglandins are chemicals that contribute to inflammation within joints, and it is the inflammation that leads to the common symptoms of pain, tenderness and swelling associated with arthritis. Meloxicam blocks the enzymes that make prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase 1 and 2) and reduces the levels of prostaglandins. As a result, inflammation and its accompanying symptoms are reduced. Meloxicam was approved for use in April 2000.
