Benign prostatic hyperplasia (a.k.a. BPH) is an enlargement of the prostate gland, present in males. It is a non-cancerous condition where an overgrowth of prostate tissue (due to excess cell replication) pushes against the urethra and the bladder, which block the flow of urine and causes pain. The cause of it is unknown, but it has been connected with the levels of male hormones in the body and their imbalance. It is a disease associated with the aging process, because above 95% of men above 80 years old have it and above 70% of men above 65. There are two drug classes used for the treatment of BPH – alpha-blockers and 5-alpha-reductate inhibitors. Alpha blockers are more effective and are usually prescribed first. Flomax
Tamsulosin is a drug for the treatment of men who are having difficulty urinating because of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In men, the tube which carries urine from the bladder to the penis (called the urethra) travels through the prostate gland. As men get older, the prostate gland enlarges, and the muscle cells within the prostate gland and the neck of the bladder (which control the flow of urine) tighten. The combination of enlargement and tightening of muscles compresses the urethra and obstructs the flow of urine. This results in difficulty urinating and retention of urine within the bladder. The tightening or contraction of the muscle cells is controlled by nerves. One type of nerve, the alpha adrenergic nerves, cause the muscle cells to tighten by releasing a chemical related to epinephrine (adrenalin). Tamsulosin blocks the effects of this chemical on the muscle cells and causes the muscles to relax. This results in a decrease in obstruction to the flow of urine.
Proscar
Proscar is prescribed to help shrink an enlarged prostate. The prostate, a chestnut-shaped gland present in males, produces a liquid that forms part of the semen. This gland completely encloses the upper part of the urethra, the tube through which urine flows out of the bladder. Many men over age 50 suffer from a benign (noncancerous) enlargement of the prostate. The enlarged gland squeezes the urethra, obstructing the normal flow of urine. Resulting problems may include difficulty in starting urination, weak flow of urine, and the need to urinate urgently or frequently. Sometimes surgical removal of the prostate is necessary. By shrinking the enlarged prostate, Proscar may alleviate the various associated urinary problems, making surgery unnecessary.
