Femara description

Description:
Femara is an oral, anti-estrogen drug that is used for treating postmenopausal women with breast cancer. Femara was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in 1997.

Femara is used:
to treat postmenopausal women with breast cancer that is resistant to the more commonly-used anti-estrogen medications such as tamoxifen (Nolvadex).

Drug Mechanism:
The growth of some breast cancers in postmenopausal women is promoted by estrogens that circulate in the blood, and the adrenal glands are the main source of these circulating estrogens. Letrozole inhibits the enzyme in the adrenal glands (aromatase) that produces the estrogens, estradiol and estrone.

Dosage Form:
Femara generally is taken once daily, with or without food (one 2.5-mg tablet a day). Continue until tumor progression is evident. Dosage adjustment is not needed in renal impairment if CCR is greater than or equal to 10 mL/min.

Drug Interactions:
There are no known drug interactions with Femara.

Pregnancy:
Femara damages the fetus. It should not be taken by pregnant women. Femara is meant to be used only by women who are no longer able to have children.

Nursing Mothers:
It is not known if Femara is secreted into breast milk.

Alcohol Considerations:
Ask your doctor for information on how much is safe to drink.

Possible Side Effects:
The most common side effects with Femara are nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, diarrhea, constipation, and chest pain. The likelihood of side effects is lower than with other drugs used more commonly in patients with breast cancer that is resistant to treatment with anti-estrogens.

Storage:
Capsules should be stored at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep this medication out of reach of children. Do not store in the bathroom or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Femara notes:

Letrozole sold under the brand name Femara is used to treat women suffering from breast cancer and who have attained menopause. Femara medication is more effective in treating breast cancer and thus advised instead of more commonly used anti-estrogen medication – Tamoxifen. Femara breast cancer medication reduces the estrogen levels that slow down the growth of certain breast tumors. Just like Femara, Anastrozole found in medical stores under the brand name Arimidex is also administered to check breast cancer development. Femara for infertility problem has shown positive results and is used in an "off-label" fashion to treat infertility. Women are recommended to take Femara infertility curing drug nearing their menses that would decrease estrogen levels and increase substances and result in ovulation. Femara PCOS drug has shown positive results in treating women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Femara endometriosis medication is very effective in checking estrogen levels thus checks progression of estrogen-dependent disease - endometriosis and the pain related to it.

One can experience Femara side effects like skin irritation, difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, hot flashes, headache, muscle or joint pain, fatigue, night sweats, nausea, vomiting, etc. if one has been using Femara for treating breast cancer symptoms. You should consult your doctor and seek immediate medical help if you face any of the above side effects. Femara and pregnancy do not go together. Femara should never been taken by pregnant women as it damages the fetus. Femara is usually used in women who have crossed the childbearing age and reached menopause.

Femara should be taken once daily, with or without food (one 2.5-mg tablet a day). Femara should be continued as long as one finds growth in the tumour. It is best to take the guidance of your healthcare provider regarding dosage of Femara who would suggest exact dosage depending upon the severity of your breast cancer.
