Modafinil is a mind and mood enhancing psychostimulant that has practically no side effects and does not affect sleep. Modafinil belongs to central nervous system stimulants. Its positive effect is based on changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the hypothalamus that controls sleep and wakefulness. In September 2003, an advisory panel to the FDA approved its use for treating shift work sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea. Modafinil is proved to be useful in treating narcolepsy, a neurological disorder marked by uncontrollable attacks of daytime sleepiness (especially in those who work night shifts). Modafinil is also used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, "dopamine-deficiency disorder" Parkinson's disease, depression, attention-deficit disorder, cognitive impairment in schizophrenia, age-related memory decline etc. This is not the full list of disorders which can be fought with the help of Modafinil. Modafinil is used experimentally in the treatment of "atypical" depression which is quite common syndrome.

1. Description.
Modafinil improves memory, and brightens one's mood, alertness and cognitive powers. The drug does not belong to amphetamines and has a smoother feel. Those who take Modafinil are reported to be able stay awake and alert for 40 hours or more. Once the action of the drug stops (as a rule Modafinil normal elimination half-life is between 12 and 15 hours), you just need to have some sleep. The action of Modafinil is based on direct stimulation of alpha-1 brain receptors that are responsible for the uptake of nor-adrenaline. Its dopamine-releasing action is weak and dose-dependent thus it does not allow a euphoric response, dose-escalation or becoming tolerant to the drug. It is long-acting and does not tend to cause peripheral sympathetic stimulation. Modafinil has the ability to diminish GABA(A) receptor signaling on the mesolimbic dopamine terminals.
2. Form of Production:
Modafinil is available in the form of tablets, each contain 100mg of the substance.
3. Before Using:
Before taking Modafinil consult your doctor first. Remember that Modafinil should not be used in place of getting enough sleep. When deciding on prescription, first of all tell your physician and/or pharmacist about any allergic reactions to Modafinil or other medications and about ANY medicines including those that do not need prescription (vitamins, herbs etc.) you are taking currently. Then, let you doctor and/or pharmacist know if you ever experienced medication overdosing (especially stimulants), if you drink a lot of alcohol or tried street drugs. Also tell if any heart problem has ever occurred after taking stimulants (irregular heart beat, chest pain) and if you have or have ever had high blood pressure, a heart attack, angina (chest pain), mental illness, or heart, liver, or kidney disease. The physician must be aware of your pregnancy (or planning pregnancy in the near future) and breastfeeding. If you already take Modafinil and must undergo a surgery (including dental surgery), inform your doctor that you take the Modafinil. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how the Modafinil medication affects you. Talk to your doctor (even if you feel better) prior to starting performing the activities (such as driving and other dangerous activities) avoided before because of your sleep disorder. Do not drink alcohol while taking Modafinil. Also some dietary instructions may be needed when taking the medicine. Talk to your doctor about eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice.
4. Dosage and Proper Use of This Medicine:
Modafinil is taken orally (by mouth) one tablet (100 mg) per day. It is usually taken once a day with or without food if greater dose is needed, you doctor will advise it, do not increase the dose on your own. Depending on your diagnoses, Modafinil may be taken in the morning or 1 hour before going to work. Avoid taking Modafinil in the evening. Take the drug at the same time every day. If you miss you scheduled time for Modafinil, do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Wait until next scheduled time of taking Modafinil and drink your prescribed dose. No changes in time and dosage should be made without your doctor prescription. Take Modafinil directly as prescribed; ask your doctor of pharmacist to explain you the part of prescription that you do not understand. Continue taking the drug even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Modafinil without talking to your doctor.
5. Side Effects:
Despite the fact that Modafinil is well-tolerated non-abusive medication there still can be some of the following side effects caused by personal intolerability: headache, nervousness, anxiety or restlessness, dizziness, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep (especially when taken late), drowsiness, depression, mood swings, upset stomach or diarrhea, loss of appetite, sweating, dry mouth, excessive thirst, nosebleed, flu like symptoms. If experiencing any of the side effects listed above or any other unusual symptoms, consult you doctor immediately.
6. Overdosing:
If accidentally the lager dose than prescribed was taken, consult your doctor immediately. The signs of overdosing include: agitation, restlessness, confusion, hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist), nervousness, shaking of a part of your body that you cannot control, fast / slow or pounding heartbeat, chest pain. The symptoms may vary from person to person.
